Upton Cross School Council
At Upton Cross, we have a school council that is run for and by the children. Two representatives from each class are elected following their application and it is their job to be the voice for the rest of the children in their class.
The representatives meet regularly to discuss any projects or ideas they would like to take forward based on the ideas from the rest of the children in the class and school. The School Councillors will then carry out their project across the year and try to make improvements to the school.
The School Council feedback their work to the rest of the school through class assemblies to ensure their ideas are implemented across the school and communication is consistent.
We have been running the school council for a number of years now. We believe that all stakeholders within the school should be involved in the decision making and when raising awareness.
School Council Trips - Newham School Council Conference
Some of our school councillors from Year 4 & 5 were selected to participate in a Newham-wide KS2 School council conference.
We were in groups with other school councillors from other Newham schools and we discussed different characteristics and qualities that make a good school councillor. We were also given the opportunity to talk to other children and make new friends!
We spoke about ways in which we can make our school more sustainable, involving the Zero Carbon Schools Project.
School Council Trips - Visit to Houses of Parliament
Our Year 4, 5 and 6 School councillors were very lucky to get selected to visit the Houses of Parliament for an exciting tour and workshop. We got to tour the House of Commons and saw where the Prime Minister sits!
We were also very lucky to have the Newham MP Uma Kamaran visit us on the day and talk to us. We asked her questions and she told us all about her day-today job as an MP. The children felt very excited to have met a real Member of Parliament!
